Black Spirituality (Organized by the Black Student Union and the Muslim Student Association)
Mission Statement:
“The Muslim Student Union and the Black Student Union co-sponsored an event in February dedicated to raising awareness about spirituality and the role that Islam has played in building community. A series of speakers discussed the historical development of Islam in the black community as well as its current development.”
Black Student Union:
“It is the mission of the Black Student Union to create and promote a supportive and inclusive community, while also intellectually challenging the Black students on the campus of UC Irvine. This organization, established specifically for political reasons, works for a more humane and culturally relevant college experience for the students on this campus. The Black Student Union strives to provide educational, cultural, and social programs which we hope will inspire our community to take action, through activism as well as outreach on and off of our home campus. This organization serves as the umbrella for the other Black organizations on campus, with our ultimate goal being to provide a welcoming and united space for our community while also stimulating an awareness of political, economic, and social forces affecting the people of the African Diaspora.”
Muslim Student Union:
“MSU strives to foster the dedication to learning and hard-work through mentorship programs and peer-tutoring. In addition, MSU offers opportunities for students to expand on their Islamic knowledge and gain deeper insights into Qur’anic teachings, as well as the lessons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), through weekly classes taught by local shuyukh. The MSU at UC Irvine plays an integral role in campus affairs, as it puts on a program in efforts to educate fellow Anteaters about Islam through “Islam Awareness Quarter.”
In addition, MSU also stays active in humanitarian outreach, and conducts blood drives and creative fundraisers for those afflicted by disaster. In concordance with the Islamic principle of defending justice, MSU partakes in campus-wide activism, whether it be for fellow students, community members, or even Muslim brothers and sisters in oppressed nations abroad.”
